A student can attend the best school and have amazing teachers but it doesn’t mean there won’t be times when they need extra help in a subject. Oftentimes your child will be reluctant to ask for help. This is why it is important to check their homework and keep open communication with their teachers.

It’s not surprising maths the toughest subject for a lot of students. To combat the issue, parents sometimes look for a math tutor to assist their kids so they don’t fall behind.

As students begin to prepare for college their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) are at the forefront of their thoughts.

Are you in need of an algebra math tutor for your student or yourself? Keep reading to learn how you can find a good tutor, and to find one fast.

What Is a Math Tutor?

A tutor is someone highly skilled in an academic subject and can explain the concepts in a way that is easier to understand in a one-on-one setting. Tutors are oftentimes educators or someone studying to go into the education field.

In other instances, it’s someone who has a high-level understanding of a subject and can present information in a clear and concise manner. Math tutors outside of teachers are typically people who work in fields such as engineering.

Things to Know Before You Start Your Search?

Before you start your search for a math tutor it is important to be clear about the help you need. A tutor may be able to cover many subjects or their focus could be on a particular subject. Grade level and desired outcomes are also important.

Other things you need to define before starting your search include:

  • Does the tutoring session need to take place in person?
  • How much are you willing to spend?
  • How often will you need to meet each week?
  • Where will the sessions take place?
  • Can you get a free session before committing?
  • Are you trying to meet a deadline?

As you begin to speak with prospects other questions may arise.

Where to Look

Private tutoring can be found in many places. Some you may not even think about. Start your search by asking family and friends for recommendations. Sometimes personal references are your best resources.

Making a post on social media pages may also return some good results. Or you can ask other parents. In every school, there are students that excel in various subjects. Your child may have a friend who is willing to help him or her work on their lessons.

If none of these options return any results, try the following.

The School Counselor

If you are looking for a tutor for your high school student it is best to start with the school guidance counselor. They often have resources that can assist families outside of the school setting.

The guidance counselor may also know of teachers within the school who offer tutoring services as a side job.

Afterschool Programs

Afterschool programs may be offered at your child’s school that is geared towards helping students that are struggling in a particular subject. The courses are taught by teachers and volunteers.

Since school is a familiar place, your child may be more comfortable in this setting. It also helps if you are a working parent and cannot get off work to transport your son or daughter from one location to another.

Community Organization

Organizations throughout the community may offer tutoring services if there is high demand. These programs are created when standardized test scores show students are not doing well in required tests.

Religious organizations, community centers, and even educators create opportunities for students to get the assistance they need.

Check with your child’s teacher or the school office to see if they know of any programs. They are usually funded through grants and are at no cost to participants. If there is a fee it is usually very minimal or income-based.

Local Colleges and Universities

Local colleges and universities are other sources to investigate when you are in need of tutoring services. Students looking to earn extra cash offer their knowledge to help others. The fee is usually minimal and they can work around your schedule.

To find a math tutor, contact the school’s match department to see if they know of anyone offering tutoring services. You can also visit the campus common areas like the library or student center and check for notices on message boards.

It also doesn’t hurt to ask someone you know who is a student and may know someone interested in helping you help.

Tutoring Services

The general services are typically in a group setting to keep the cost down. You will need to check with the centers if your student is in need of individual instruction.

Before settling on a center make sure you get references. Also, be aware you make be obligated to sign a contract.

Online Tutoring Options
