7 Big Benefits of Tutoring Services for Your High School Child

benefits of tutoring

If your child is in high school, chances are, they’re dealing with some challenging subject matter. They might come to you for help, but are you really the best person to help them? It’s probably been a while since you worked on these things, and methods of learning change frequently.

But if you can’t help, how can your teenager get the extra help that they need? In this critical time, they’re preparing themselves for their next big step: university. It’s crucial that they do well in their classes.

This is where the benefits of tutoring come in. Getting a tutor for your child might be the difference between them thriving in difficult classes and them struggling and falling behind. High school is tough, and everyone needs a little bit of extra help sometimes.

Here are 7 benefits of getting a maths tutoring service for your teenage child when they’re in need.

1. Students Can Be Educated Based on Their Needs

Not every student learns in the same way. In a large class with many students (as most high school classrooms have), it’s nearly impossible for a teacher to focus on the specific needs of every single pupil, no matter how hard they try.

When tutoring, they generally work with very small groups and occasionally one-on-one with their students. This allows them to “teach to the student” and focus on specific needs and learning styles that teachers in full classrooms simply don’t have time or resources for.

Sometimes, a student just needs things re-explained in a way that makes sense for them for everything to click together.

2. Focus Is Easier

Perhaps the problem that your teenage child is having is an inability to stay completely on-task in the classroom. This is common; classrooms are full of distractions. Between other students, cell phones, rogue noises in the hallways, and other random occurrences to pull the mind away from studies, there’s so much room for the brain to wander.

With a tutor, there’s much less of that. As the teacher is working directly with a small group, there’s no room to chat quietly with a neighbour or subtly check a cell phone without the teacher noticing. It’s much easier to focus when a teacher is talking directly with the student instead of trying to manage an entire classroom.

3. Tutoring Can Ease Frustration and Anxiety

Sometimes, just being in a class full of students makes a student anxious about being wrong.

Getting the wrong answer can be scary and frustrating, and frustration can lead to giving up entirely and being unwilling to move forward in their studies.

With a tutor, this problem is lightened. There are fewer students, and a good tutor will help to foster confidence during the session to empower the pupil to try, even if they’re going to be wrong.

Also, all of those students are being tutored in that subject for the same reason: they need help. This can ease a child’s anxiety. Knowing that they’re not alone in needing extra assistance can be helpful to their self-esteem and let them grow as learners.

4. Tutoring Can Effectively Use Assistive Technology

While many classrooms are making a shift towards bringing technology in full-time, it can be difficult to use it effectively in a class of many rambunctious teenagers. Sometimes, a little bit of tech goes a long way, or else it gets a little bit distracting.

In a maths tutoring environment, a tutor is able to bring out the technology when they need it. They can use it for a quick example or to drive in a point that they’re trying to make with a particular problem.

They can also have students use their own technology without it getting out of hand. In the conventional classroom, letting students bring out their phones can be the end of the functional class period. In a tutoring session, phones can be gone just as quickly as they’re out.

5. Students Will Have Enhanced Confidence

High school is a difficult time for the ego, and struggling through maths or science is no way to help that situation.

A student who takes the time to go through maths tutoring and ease their struggle will feel more confident in the classroom. They’ll be able to raise their hand and answer questions. They’ll be able to turn in homework and essays with ease.

They’ll have had the practice of the small group to prepare themselves for the large classroom again, and they’ll be more educated on the topics they were struggling with.

6. Students Feel Comfortable Asking Questions

Alongside the confidence issue, it can be difficult for a teenager to ask questions in class, even if they know that they’re struggling with a topic.

No one wants to seem like they’re the odd one out, especially as a teenager. This can cause your child to struggle more in the classroom, as they’ll never get the answers that they need.

Students form closer relationships with tutors, making it easier to ask questions without shame.

7. Tutors Can Help Prepare Students for Future Learning

Students won’t be in tutoring forever, but the skills they learn about their learning styles and how they should study to best suit their needs can follow them through the rest of their academic life. One of the primary benefits of tutoring is that it helps students prepare to be better learners, not just better at that one specific topic.

When a student knows their personal strengths and weaknesses, and how to address them, they’re better able to apply these things to future courses, even when they’re no longer being tutored. The long-term tutoring benefits are massive, especially for a student planning on going to university.

Have These Benefits of Tutoring Convinced You?

Maths tutoring can be a transformative experience for any child struggling with confidence in the classroom. It’s okay to need extra help sometimes, and a good tutor can be just the help that your high school child needs.

Your student will gain life skills to apply to their future studies and have a healthier outlook on education after a term with a professional tutor. The benefits of tutoring will extend far into their adulthood.
