7 Things Parents Can Do to Motivate Their Kids in School

As parents, we all want what is best for our children like living a good life. To help them succeed later on in life, having a good education is one of the many things we have to consider. But before one can reach that, a strong educational foundation must be built first.

However, many parents nowadays are seeking help from experts with concerns about their children getting demotivated in school. Yes, it is alarming for parents to see their children struggle. But getting the right help and sticking to a consistent action plan can help bring back their zest for academic learning. Things like HSC private tutoring, other professional tutoring services, and even loving encouragement can help get them back on track.

If you wish to learn more about the things you can do to motivate your kids in school, then read on.

Show Them Your Active Support

Our children’s academic life can get very hectic, and we might not even know what’s going on until it is too late. As parents, we often have to juggle through multiple things at once – work, children, mortgages, just to name a few. But as much as possible, always make time to check on your children’s school life, too.

Get in the habit of asking how you can help, show up for school activities when you can, and be active in the way you support them. When your children see how invested you are in their education, it can help them get fired up for school.

Reward Effort, Not the Outcome

Achievements and awards are typically the ideal outcomes that parents expect, but pushing your children to excel in academics can pressure them. It can also take the fun out of learning. Instead of making them believe that awards are the end all and be all, focus on the efforts they poured into their education instead.

Did they study diligently for an exam? Did they continue to pursue something even when they failed the first time? Respect and reward hard work, rather than focusing too much on medals and awards. Later in life, the former will always get them through life’s real challenges.

Express Social Reinforcers

Material rewards can work on some children, while some are not as keen to them as others. But one kind of reward that every child responds well to are social reinforcers. Simply reminding them that they are doing a good job, praising them, and letting them know that they are loved can boost their confidence and self-esteem.

It should also be a given that everyone in the community can provide that kind of support as well. When you are hiring professional tutoring services, for instance, check if the teachers also value positive reinforcement as much as you do.

Communicate Openly

Allow your children to open up to you. Respond without judgement and anger. Make sure to express your appreciation for their sharing. Children will have friends and other peers, but at the end of the day, they only have their parents for much-needed support.

Make Room for Mistakes

To expound on the previous point, being able to communicate openly means being able to accept that mistakes happen. It is healthy to push your children to do their best, but as parents, understand that setbacks are bound to happen as well. Sometimes, the best lessons in life are ones that we learn through mistakes. Let them experience the consequences, so they learn how to avoid them in the future.

Seek Help from Their Teachers

Talking over dinner might not cut when it comes to checking up on how they are doing at school. Part of active support is to seek counsel from their teachers. Ask them how your child is doing, which areas is he or she struggling with, enquire about tutoring services that they know of, and other relevant queries.

Get Outside Help

Speaking of professional tutoring services, you should also look into getting outside help. As mentioned, you can try looking for professional tutoring services, preferably HSC private tutoring. You can try to reach out to someone you know in your neighbourhood. But there are more benefits to going for the first option.

With HSC private tutoring, your child can be exposed to concepts, ideas, and learning techniques that can help them. Giving them a sense of learning progress can also significantly increases their motivation to learn more. If you are a busy parent, this will be even more helpful. Just make sure that you work with HSC private tutoring providers that you can trust.
